Abstract

1,186,460. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. WISSENSCHAFTLICH-TECHNISCHES ZENTRUM AUTOMOBILBAU HOHENSTEINERNSTHAL. Dec. 2, 1967, No.54924/67. Heading F1F. A multi-unit rotary-piston I. C . engine comprises a housing having a first side member and an intermediate member at respective sides of a first casing defining the cylinder of a first rotary-piston and cylinder unit, an inlet passage for a mixture of fuel, lubricating oil and air for the first unit passing through the side member, the piston of the first unit, a transfer passage in the intermediate member and an opening in the periphery of the first casing communicating with the combustion chamber of the first unit, the intermediate member and a second side member or further intermediate member at respective sides of a second casing defining the cylinder of a second rotary-piston and cylinder unit, the further intermediate member when present defining one side of the casing of a third rotarypiston and cylinder unit, a second inlet passage for a mixture of fuel, lubricating oil and air for the second unit passing through the first mentioned intermediate member, the piston of the second unit, a transfer passage in the second side member or further intermediate member and an opening in the periphery of the second casing communicating with the combustion chamber of the second unit and a shaft rotatably mounted in the side members provided with eccentrics on which the pistons of the units are rotatably mounted. The invention is shown applied to a two-unit engine, but any number of units may be fitted. A carburetter 7 passes a gaseous fuel/ air mixture with entrained lubricating oil to an inlet manifold 6 connected by passages 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, in a first side member 2 and an intermediate member 4 respectively. The passage 5 communicates through an axial passage in a piston 9 of a first rotary-piston and cylinder unit to cool the piston 9, a transfer passage 10 in the member 4 and a peripheral port 11 with the combustion chamber of the first unit. The passage 5<SP>1</SP> communicates through an axial passage in a piston 9<SP>1</SP> of a second rotary-piston and cylinder unit to cool the piston 9<SP>1</SP>, a transfer passage 10<SP>1</SP> in a second side member 3 and a peripheral port 11<SP>1</SP> with the combustion chamber of the second unit.
