Abstract

1,008,746. Rotary-piston I.C. engines; motor power plant. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 14, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963], No. 42997/64. Divided out of 1,008,745. Headings F1F and F1Q. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n+1 lobe type air supplied through a passage or duct 25 (Fig. 1) to a cavity 14 containing a piston 10 is pre-compressed by a piston 11 driven by exhaust gases flowing from said cavity through a passage or duct 26 to a port 24, the air being received by piston 11 through a port 23. Passage 25 includes a non-return valve 42, and passage 26 contains a rotatable valve 46 which is driven by a shaft 13 for piston 11, chambers 43, 44 in said passages serving as reservoirs for the air and exhaust gases respectively. Piston 11 may be smaller than piston 10, as shown, and rotate at a correspondingly higher speed, a shaft 12 for piston 10 being coupled to shaft 13 by e.g. gearing (not shown), to rotate in the same direction. Radial sealing strips for piston 11 may be provided at its apices 11b and in cavity 15 at points 16, 17. Fuel injected into the compressed air by injectors 27, 28 may be ignited by spark plugs 31, 32. Alternatively, the engine may comprise a single piston 11 to pre-compress air for a plurality of pistons 10, or it may comprise a plurality of pairs of pistons 10, 11. The engine may be modified to include a single piston 10/ (Fig. 2) lodged in a cavity 14f which is supplied with precompressed air by a compressor 51 which is driven by a shaft 12f for said piston, the exhaust gases being discharged from said cavity through a turbine 52 coupled to shaft 12f. Rotatable valves 55, 56 are provided to connect either or both of passages 25h, 26h to the atmosphere. Turbine 52 may be replaced by a machine of different type which can be driven by exhaust gases.
