Abstract

336,094. B³chi, A. Oct. 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Four-stroke-cycle engines; pumps, actuating. -- The exhaust from a twelve cylinder engine is used in two exhaust turbines driving scavenge air compressor or generators, the exhaust piping being arranged so that only those cylinders which have ignition separated by angles of 180‹ or 360‹ deliver to the same conduit. Each air compressor may deliver to a separate conduit feeding those cylinders which exhaust into the turbine driving that compressor, or the two compressors may deliver to a common air pipe. As shown in Fig. 1, cylinders 1, 2, 11, 12 have a common exhaust pipe; similarly, cylinders 5, 6, 7, 8 and 3, 4, 9, 10. Two sets of four cylinders deliver to the turbine 13 and one set to the turbine 14. In modified arrangements six cylinders exhaust into each turbine; each turbine has two exhaust supply pipes one connected to four cylinders and the other to two. The turbines may be arranged near the centre of the engine. The sequence of ignition in the cylinders is set out in the description.
