Abstract

474,786. Pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 8, 1936, No. 12999. Convention date, May 31, 1935. [Class 7 (ii)] In multi-cylinder internal-combustion engines of the kind comprising two or more rows of cylinders with two or more crankshafts, the waste gases from the cylinders being utilized to drive two or more waste-gas turbines each driving an associated supercharger, and each cylinder being supplied with air from only that supercharger whose turbine receives waste gases from that cylinder, each supercharger supplies supercharging air to the same number of cylinders in each row, whereby if the supply of supercharging air from any one supercharger should fail the resulting alteration in the torsional oscillations is substantially the same for each crankshaft. Rotary compressors 16, 17 each supplying air to the adjacent six of two rows of cylinders 2, 3 are driven by exhaust-gas turbines 18, 19 respectively, the exhaust gases from the cylinders associated with each compressor being led to the corresponding turbine. The air is delivered from each compressor through branch conduits symmetrically arranged with respect to the axis of the compressor whereby the compressors are interchangeable ; also, the conduits are tapered so as to increase the pressure of the air delivered.
