Abstract

319,426. Haugsted, F. V. July 3, 1928. Four-stroke-cycle engines; ejectors, exhaust; cylinders, pumps for. - The exhaust pipes from the cylinders of an engine having six or more cylinders are connected to two or more manifolds; the connections to any one manifold are arranged, so that the exhaust periods in the cylinders do not overlap in order to avoid back pressure in the cylindders. The two manifolds such as s, r, Fig. 6, have funnel-like outlets u, v so that the gases issuing from either manifold at high velocity have a suction effect on the gases in the other manifold to assist the withdrawal of gases from the cylinders. The cylinders fire in the order 1, 3, 5, 6, 4, 2 and are connected to the manifolds in the order shown. The manifolds may be separate and join in a common outlet. In an eight-cylinder engine, the cylinders may be connected to three manifolds h, i, k, Fig. 9, with nozzle outlets to a common pipe o; the manifolds i, k may be combined into one only. The exhaust may pass to atmosphere or be used in a boiler or in a turbine to drive a charge-air compressor.
