Abstract

696,729. Centrifugal blowers. LIST, H. Sept. 7, 1951 [Sept. 13, 1950; Sept. 13, 1950], No. 21208/51. Class 110(i) [Also in Group XXVII] A blower 1 delivering scavenging air to a twostroke diesel or other engine, and driven from the engine crankshaft by a gear train including gear pairs 2, 3 and 4, 6, is constructed together with the gear pair 4, 6 and the bearings thereof as a self-contained unit 7, 8 which is mounted on the main gear casing 34 as by bolts 14. The unit 7, 8 comprises a blower casing 7 and a cover plate 8 attached thereto by screws and cotters. To ensure accurate location of the unit 7, 8 on the casing 34, a bush 15 on the cover plate 8 enters a recess 17. The gear 2 meshes a crankshaft gear (not shown). The gear 3 drives the gear 4 resiliently through an elastic coupling 27 consisting of segmental rubber blocks located between vanes 30 alternately connected to the shaft 24 of the gear 3 and a shaft 20<SP>1</SP> splined to the gear 4. A seal 33 prevents leakage of lubricant into the coupling. A gear 23 meshing the gear 3 powers a fuel injection pump drive shaft 35. The space 36 acts as a scavenging air receiver for the blower 1, a fluid-tight packing tube 37 being provided. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the coupling 27 is dispensed with, the shafts 20<SP>1</SP>, 24 being wholly contained within the casing 34 and being splined together at their left-hand ends so that torsional flexibility of the shaft 20<SP>1</SP> alone provides drive resiliency.
