Abstract

In a motor vehicle having an engine 1 mounted at the front of the vehicle with its crank-shaft extending longitudinally, a clutch 5 is arranged at the rear of the engine with its input and output shafts 7, 9 aligned coaxially with the crankshaft, the input shaft 13 of manually - operated changespeed synchromesh gearing 11 located beneath the clutch 5 is connected to the clutch output shaft 9 by means of pulleys 47, 59 and a toothed belt 61 or by a chain or gearwheel drive, and a differential 17 driven from the gearing 11 and located beneath the engine 1 has output members (not shown) connected by universal joints to half shafts driving the front wheels of the vehicle. The cylinder axes of the engine 1 are inclined to one side of the vehicle, and the engine air cleaner 19, inlet and exhaust manifolds 21, 31, generator 23, carburetter 25, oil filler 27 and distributer 29 are located on the other side. A one-piece housing 35 bolted to the cylinder block 37 is divided by a horizontal wall 49 into a clutch compartment 33 and compartment 50 which houses the gearing 11 and the differential 17 and is closed by a cover-plate 51. A casing 45 encloses the beltdrive 61, and seals 63 prevent escape of oil from the housing 35 through apertures for the shafts 9, 13.
