Abstract

567,646. Driving gear. VINCENT H.R.D. CO., Ltd., and VINCENT, P. C. Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16916. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a power unit for a motor vehicle, the engine cylinders are arranged horizontally or nearly so and a change-speed gear is arranged either above or below the cylinders and crankshaft and as viewed in plan lies within the compass of the cylinder block and the crankshaft casing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the engine is of the opposed-piston type, as described in Specification 555,974, and having transverse horizontal cylinders (not shown) situated between two crank-shafts 10, 11 arranged longitudinally on a motor cycle. The driving shaft 12 of the change-speed gear is driven from the crank-shaft 10 through gearing 16, 15 and from the crank-shaft 11 through gearing 13, 14, 15, the shaft 12 being situated nearer 10 than 11 for convenience in driving a road wheel of the cycle. The change-speed gear is mounted in a frame 27 bolted at 28 to the engine and comprises the driving shaft 12, the lay-shaft 26 and gears 17 ... 20 and 21 ... 24 connecting the two shafts. The final driven shaft of the change-speed gear is coaxial with the shaft 12. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the engine cylinders are nearly horizontal and the crank-shaft 34 is arranged transversely of the vehicle. The change-speed gear is driven from the crankshaft through a clutch 35 and gearing 36, 37 and comprises coaxial driving and driven hollow shafts 38, 40 and a lay-shaft 39. The driven shaft 40 drives road-wheel shafts 50, 51 through a differential gear 47, the shaft 51 passing through the hollow shafts 38, 40. The changespeed gear has a subsidiary oil sump 57 inside the engine sump 59. An inspection cover 63 is provided for access to the clutch 35.
