Abstract

330,231. Ariel Works, Ltd., Sangster, J. Y., and Turner, E. Feb. 1, 1920. Driving-gear; crank chambers.-An engine particularly for use on motor-cycles, other light road vehicles or motor boats is formed in units each of four cylinders arranged in two parallel pairs 1 - - 4, with two double throw crankshafts b, c connected together by gearing arranged between the crankshaft bearings d<1>, d<2>. The crank throws are outside the bearings. The gearing may be direct meshing spur wheels b<1>, c<1>, spur wheels with an idler wheel between them or chain gear. The transmission gearing is housed in an extension of the crank case; the drive may be by chain gear from one of the crankshafts or as shown from one of the connecting gear wheels c'. This drives the outer toothed member m<1> of the clutch; bearings m<4>, m<5> are provided in each side of this toothed wheel m<1> for the main transmission gear shaft m<3>. By the arrangement shown the engine may be dismounted as a whole without disturbance of this transmission gear. The engine may be mounted centrally on a motorcycle with a chain wheel drive direct to the road wheel. Several units as described may be combined into the engine, all the crankshafts being parallel.
