Abstract

433,509. Plant; driving-gear. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. Nov. 30, 1934, No. 34433. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1933. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Groups XXVI and XXXIII] In a power installation in which a plurality of non- reversible power " units " reversibly drive a common gear wheel 4, at least two units 19, 20, Fig. 1, are associated with a single pair of driving pinions 17, 18 through clutch means 21, 24, 27, 28 whereby each power unit can be coupled at will with one or other pinion, reversing gear wheels 22, 23 and 25, 26 being provided, and the arrangement is such that for forward drive of the common gear wheel 4 one power unit 19 is directly clutched to one pinion 17 and the second power unit 20 is clutched to the second pinion 18 through a reversing gear wheel drive 25, 26, while for reverse drive of the common gear wheel the first power unit 19 is clutched to the second pinion 18 through a reversing gear wheel drive 22, 23 and the second power unit 20 is directly clutched to the first pinion 17. A power " unit " may comprise a group of steam or internal-combustion engines or turbines in line or side by side. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement having at each side of the common gear wheel 4 two parallel engines with their crank shafts coupled by the reversing gear wheels 34, 35. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 comprises also arrangements in which each power unit or two side by side units with coupled crank shafts can be coupled at will to one or other of two pinions associated solely with such unit or two units. Fig. 4 (Cancelled), shows four multi-cylinder internal-combustion engines 12, 12<1>, 13, 13<1> lying in the same horizontal plane, each engine having a pair of driving pinions 5, 6 and clutch arrangements 7, 8 whereby either the pinion 5 or the pinion 6 transmits the power to the common gear wheel 15. The units 121, 13<1> act on internal teeth on the rim of the wheel 15. Toothed gears 9, 9<1> for each unit cause the pinion 6, when clutched in, to rotate in the direction opposite to that of the engine crank shaft. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
