424,817. Locomotive driving-gear. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. Sept. 11, 1934, No. 26104. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1933. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii)] In an internal-combustion-engine locomotive of the kind wherein the drive from the engine is transmitted through an hydraulic gear and a mechanical reversing or other gear, the input shaft of the hydraulic gear is driven by the engine at a speed higher than that of the engine crankshaft. In the construction shown, a Diesel engine 1 with two crank shafts 2 drives the shaft 10 of a F÷ttinger gear 3 through multiplying gear 11, 12, the shaft 10 being at a higher level than the crankshafts. The hydraulic gear drives the axles through bevel reversing gear 4, reducing gear 13, and a lay shaft 5 and coupling rods 6. Modifications are described in which (1) two engines, each driving an hydraulic gear, drive a common reversing gear and lay shaft, and (2) two locomotives, similar to that shown, are coupled together to form a compound locomotive. The engine, hydraulic and reversing gears may all be mounted on a readily removable bed-plate, so that the complete power unit may be tested separately from the locomotive.
