Abstract

410,031. Power plant. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON, Winterthur, Switzerland. Nov. 23, 1933, No. 32723. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1932. [Class 7 (ii).] In a ship propulsion system, a main and an auxiliary engine 1, 5 are connectable to the propeller shaft so that either alone or both drive it according to power output required. A clutch 2 is interposed between the main engine and shaft, while a combined fluid clutch 13, 14 and mechanical clutch 15, 16 is used with reducing gear train 6, 7 from the auxiliary engine ; when this drives alone the clutch 15, 16 is used, but when in conjunction with the main engine the fluid clutch is in. The auxiliary engine may drive an air compressor 9 for supplying the main engine. In a modification, the auxiliary engine drives a dynamo which supplies a motor driving the pinion 6 ; several generator sets may supply one motor.
