Abstract

[Class 114] [See also Groups XIII and XXVI] A multi-pressure steam plant in which live steam of different pressures is used of which at least one pressure exceeds 20-25 atmospheres is arranged so that the engine fed by the super pressure generator is coupled to the output shaft in parallel with the engine utilizing the normal pressure steam, and a control means is included whereby the exhaust steam on the super pressure engine can be used at choice in the normal pressure engine or for the operation of auxiliary engines or for both purposes. A power plant for ships comprises a super pressure generator 1 providing steam for a super pressure engine 2 which is coupled by a gear 7 with the main reduction gear 5 of a propeller shaft 6. This shaft is also driven by gearing from a plant comprising turbines 3, 4 taking steam from a battery of normal pressure boilers 22. The exhaust pipe 8 from the super pressure generator is valved so that it may supply steam to the normal pressure engine 3 or may be led by a pipe 9 to drive auxiliaries. In a modification, a super pressure boiler supplies a similar super pressure engine 2 and a second engine 2<1> located adjacent to the boiler. This second turbine 21 is used for driving one or more blowers 18 and its exhaust is led to one or more pre-heaters 19. Alternatively or additionally, the turbine may drive the electric generator 23, for ships' lighting and when the ship is stationary can act as a power station owing to provision of an auxiliary condenser 29. In a further modification the two super pressure turbines are arranged adjacent the generator and one of them receives exhaust steam from the other and may be connected with the normal pressure boilers also. An arrangement is also described whereby such a plant can be produced as a modification of an existing plant in which case the gear wheels are replaced by other gears of different ratio in order to cope with the increased torque on the power shaft. Instead of using a separate generator a combined generator may be employed such as a normal water tube boiler of the divergent tube type into the furnace of which an evaporating coil is built which delivers super pressure steam.
