Abstract

635,195. Elastic fluid turbines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., April 24, 1945, No. 10245. Convention date, April 26, 1944. [Class 110(iii)] In a power plant, which may form part of a locomotive engine; comprising a gas turbine driving a compressor which supplies air through a heat exchanger to one or more combustion chambers supplying gas to the turbine, the exhaust gases from the latter passing through the heat exchanger and through a boiler to raise steam, the turbine also provides. the output power and has starting nozzles through which steam from the boiler can be supplied for starting the plant. Air from an axial flow compressor 6 passes through the tubes 33 of the heat exchanger to an annular chamber 23, from which it enters a series of combustion chambers 12 through concentric walls 13, 14 and openings 16. Fuel is supplied through nozzles 17. The exhaust gases leaving the blades 19 of the turbine are discharged to a chamber defined by walls 27, 28, 29, and flow across the heat exchanger tubes 33, boiler tubes 39 and superheater tubes 45. The boiler tubes are connected by headers 37, 38 and pipes 41, 42 to a water drum 40. The latter may be supplied with water through a pipe 43. Steam passes from a steam dome 40<1> to the superheater tubes, from which it may be supplied through pipe 50 for heating and other purposes and through pipe 46 to a nozzle box 48 to assist in driving the turbine. The plant is started by steam raised by an auxiliary combustion chamber 52, air for this purpose being supplied by a motordriven centrifugal compressor 54. The latter and a motor-driven starting fuel pump may be operated by an electric storage battery. The normal running fuel pump and other auxiliaries may be driven from the turbine shaft through gearing. Specification 413,697 is referred to.
