Abstract

368,483. Turbine locomotives. HOLZWARTH, H., 7, Goethestrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Feb. 5, 1931, No. 3747. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1930. [Class 79 (i).] . A lay-out for driving a vehicle such as a locomotive comprises a turbine 13 driven by combustion products and a turbine 28 driven by steam produced by the waste heat of the combustion process. Gearing 30 connects the two turbines to a common lay-shaft 31. The combustion of primary fuel takes place in the explosion chamber 3 of a turbine 5 which drives through gearing 6 a compressor 7 for the combustion air which is drawn in at 8 and delivered by a pipe 9 to the explosion chambers. The exhaust from the turbine 5 passes by a conduit 10 and a heat-exchanger 11 to the turbine 13 from which it exhausts through a heat-exchanger 14. All parts of the explosion turbine are cooled by oil or other medium such as water or diphenyloxide, which is circulated by a pump 16 through pipes 17, 18 and a boiler 19. Steam for the second driving turbine 28 is derived from the heat of the oil in the boiler 19 in the following manner: feedwater supplied to a pipe 21 passes through a heat-exchanger 22 associated with the compressed air conduit 9, and then to the heat-'exchanger 14 whence it passes to the boiler 19. The steam generated here passes by pipe 26 to the heat-exchanger 11 where it is superheated before its entry into the turbine 28.
