Abstract

413,697. Gas turbine plant. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and FORSLING, B. E. G., Highcroft, Ashlawn Road, Rugby. Jan. 18, 1933, No. 1690. [Class 110 (iii).] In a gas turbine plant comprising at least two turbines on separate shafts, one driving the air compressor and the other producing power, means are provided outside the gas cycle whereby the distribution of power between individual shafts can be altered or power transmitted from one shaft to another. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, an electric generator 5 is driven by a main gas turbine 4, and an air compressor 1 by an exhaust gas turbine 6. This turbine is aided by a variable-speed electric motor 9 which, on starting, is supplied with current from an external source. The compressed air passes through a preheater 7 to a combustion chamber 2 where products of combustion are formed and mixed with unburnt air and then used partly in the turbine 4 and partly for reheating the gases in the interstage pipe 20 as described in Specification 412,970. In a modification the turbines 4, 6 work in parallel, and in a further modification one turbine of the double-rotation type is used, one of the shafts driving the generator and the other driving the compressor with the aid of an electric motor. The aiding motor may be a steam turbine. In Fig. 4 the waste heat of the combustion products generates steam in a boiler 18. This steam is used in two turbines 20, 21, mounted respectively on the shafts of the compressor 1 and the main turbine 4. Air from the compressor 1 passes through a preheater 7 to the combustion chamber 2 and the products pass in series through the main turbine 4, a reheater 30, the compressor turbine 6, the preheater 7, the furnace of the boiler 18, and an economizer 19. The steam turbine 20 is governed by a speed governor 23 and the turbine 21 by a pressure governor 24. On starting up, steam from an outside source may be supplied to the turbine 20, or the furnace of the boiler 18 may be independently fired.
