Abstract
645,641. Gas and steam turbine plant. FEENY, V. F. (Mount, W. W.). July 26, 1948, No. 19920. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XII] Ram-jet combustion chambers 18, Fig. 1, are arranged tangentially on the periphery of a power rotor 10 which drives an electric generator 60. The jets discharge into a surrounding annular chamber 30 which forms the firebox of a steam or other vapour generator having an annular steam drum 44. The combustion gases are discharged through pipes 38 and silencers 40. Fuel is supplied by a pipe 80 to an axial bore 82 in the shaft 12 and distributed by pipes 86 to the burners. At starting, the gases are ignited by burning gas supplied through a pipe 90. Combustion air is taken in at the central duct 24. The air pressure may be augmented by means of a paddle-fan, at the entrance of the duct 24, driven by a separate electric motor. The air may pass through a ring of fixed guide blades just above the rotor. The rotor may be formed of two spaced discs and the jet-tubes held in a fabricated structure welded to the discs. The space between the discs may be used as a fuel duct when the fuel is gas or powdered coal. Alternatively, the jet-tubes may be secured in holes bored in a solid rotor rim. The jet-tube may have a jacket 286. Fig. 10, divided by a helical partition 290. Fuel introduced at 292 is heated in passing round the chamber and is injected at 294. A liquid oxidizing agent may be used in place of air. The agent is introduced to a chamber 314, Fig. 12, by a pipe 312 and the fuel by pipe 320 to the jacket 317. The agent enters the chamber through an aperture 328 and is spread by a baffle 332. The fuel enters through holes 324. The steam generated may be superheated and passed from pipe 48, Fig. 1, to a steam-turbine or other user. The steamturbine may drive a separate generator or the jet-tube rotor may be connected by bevel-gearing and a clutch to the generator on the steam-turbine shaft. A starting motor is provided and, when it is in use, the clutch is opened.
