Abstract

860,822. Turbine plant. YARROW & CO. Ltd., and MASON, F. T. Sept. 23, 1954 [Oct. 12, 1953], No. 28007/53. Class 110 (3). In a marine propulsion plant comprising a steam unit and a gas turbine the latter is constrained to operate below maximum power. High and low pressure steam turbines 1, 2 (combined rating x s.h.p.) drive a propeller shaft 7 to which gas turbines 4, 5 (rating x/2 s.h.p. each) may be coupled sequentially through synchronous clutches 6, when the steam turbines become fully loaded. As one gas turbine reaches 70% power it is held there and the steam turbines throttled back as necessary. With both gas turbines in use the installation reaches 85% full power and the constraint is removed to enable the gas turbines to achieve full power. A further steam turbine 2b moves the craft astern. For emergency start with no steam the gas turbines are used. For emergency reversing the gear-box 3 incorporates a reverse gear and clutch, alternatively an additional gas turbine is employed.
