Abstract

576,011. Propelling ships. AKT-. GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. April 7, 1944, No. 6571. Convention date, March 20, 1943. [Class 114] In a multi-screw vessel in which some of the shafts 1, 2 are driven by steam, diesel, or other propelling means 3, 4, whilst shaft 5 for maximum power is driven by gas turbine 8, the turbine is actuated by a starting motor 15 supplied with current from generator 14 (Fig. 1), or 19 (Fig. 2), driven, respectively, from the shaft 1 or the shaft 5, when the latter is rotated by the motion of the ship. To avoid braking effect by the main propeller during cruising, sufficient power is supplied to starting motor 15 (Fig. 1) from generator 14 to enable shaft 5 to rotate without slip, the coupling 9 between turbine 8 and its gearing 10 being disconnected. The same purpose is achieved by supplying generator 19 with current from the ship's network.
