Abstract
113,990. Black, D. C., and Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Co. Feb. 9, 1917. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers; propeller shafts, arrangement of.-In marine propulsion installations having two or more propeller shafts, these shafts and gearing are arranged so that a maximum hold space is secured. Generally, intermediate shafts are used and geared at both ,ends, the forward gears being in the engine room and the rear gears being placed well aft. Several arrangements are described in the Specification, of which, as an example, Fig. 3 shows a plan of an installation for 4 propellers having the pairs of intermediate shafts 8, 9 and 10, 11 arranged in tunnels 12, 13 respectively, and driven by gearing from the motors in the engine room. Single or multiple gears 4, 5, 6, 7 transmit the power to the propeller shafts. In a further example shown in Fig. 7, the intermediate shafts 61, 62 are arranged in tunnels 63, 64 in the wings of the ship. The motors are of the turbine, electric, reciprocating, oil, gas, or other known types, while the gearing is single or multiple of mechanical, hydraulic, or other known kinds.
