Abstract

109,513. Portham, R. S. Oct. 16, 1916. Motor power plant.-A marine propulsion system comprises a prime mover, such as a turbine or a group of turbines, which for going ahead drives through a positive clutch and for going astern drives through a hydraulic transmitter or transformer so that a separate motor or a reversal of the same motor for astern running are obviated. In one form, shown in Fig. 1, the clutch 2 is arranged at the aft end of the turbine and drives through reduction gearing 4, 5, 7, 8 on to the propeller shaft 9. The forward end of the turbine drives through the reversal hydraulic transmitter 10, gearing 11, 12, single or duplicate counter shafts 6, and the gearing 7, 8. The transmitter is out of action when going ahead. The transmitter may be arranged on the counter shafts 6, Fig. 3 shows an arrangement with two or three turbines T, T<1>, T<2>, and Fig. 6 shows an arrangement with two turbines T<3>, T<4>. In the latter arrangement on going astern the steam is shut off from the turbine T<4> and transmitter 10. In all these arrangements a transmitter with two secondaries may be used so that for temporary manoeuvring purposes the turbine or turbines may drive both ahead and astern through the transmitter.
