Motor power plant; driving and transmission mechanism. - A marine turbine installation adapted for a wide range of speed and power, and employing both mechanical and electric transmission, comprises a number of propeller shafts 11 each driven at high speeds by a high-pressure turbine 17 and a low-pressure turbine 18 through reducing-gearing 13, while at lower speeds cruising turbines 23 are brought into action, these turbines 23 exhausting into the turbines 17 of the inner propeller shafts and driving generators 28 which supply electromotors 29 driving the outer propeller shafts through the reducing-gearing 13. For still lower speeds, the valves and switches are manipulated so that the turbines for the inner propellers are operated in parallel from the exhaust of one turbine 23, while the electromotors 29 for the outer propellers are operated in parallel from a single generator 28. Reversing sections 19 are provided. Other variations are possible, and regulating-means of the kind described in Specification 3026/13 may be provided. Fig. 3 shows the reducing-gearing 13 comprising gears on the turbine shafts 14, 15 meshing with idlers 16, which in turn mesh with the gear 12 on the propeller shaft 11. In a modification, only one main turbine is associated with each propeller shaft, the low-pressure turbine 18 being dispensed with, and a single cruising turbine driving a generator is employed.
