Abstract

104,458. Wiesengrund, B. Aug. 1, 1916. Tooled gearing. - In toothed reduction gearing for driving a shaft from two or more motors, each high-speed motor shaft drives a separate intermediate shaft which is geared to the driven shaft, the high or low speed gearing, or both, being duplicated. Motors may also be connected to the intermediate shafts. In the form shown in Fig. 4, pinions 1, 2, 1a, 2a on the high-speed shafts gear with wheels 6, 6a, 7, 7a on the intermediate shafts, which carry pinions 9, 8 gearing with the wheel 10 un the driven shaft. The gearing 8, 9, 10 may be duplicated, and, in this case, the high-speed gearing may be either single, or in duplicate as shown. The motors may comprise internal-combustion engines, turbines, or electric motors, and may be all of one type or may be combined in any manner. Each motor may drive through gearing of different ratio. Motors may be connected up to the intermediate shafts, for instance in the case of a submarine, in which oil-engines on the intermediate shafts drive the driven shaft and at the same time drive electric motors on the high-speed shafts as generators. By the use of clutches, the electric motors may be used for driving during submersion. Additional bearings 12, 13 may be arranged between the pinions or wheels on any of the shafts.
