117,840. Parsons, Sir C. A., Cook, S. S., and Douglas, L. M. July 30, 1917. Toothed gearing.-Double reducing-gear for turbines &c., in which all the gear wheels are of the double-helical type and are arranged symmetrically about a plane passing through the driven shaft, comprises one or more driving-pinions g each engaging two gear-wheels l, m on two intermediate shafts o, p carrying pinions q, r engaging the main gear-wheel s; each intermediate shaft is so arranged or balanced that the resultant of the forces acting upon it passes through its centre of gravity. As shown, each of three driving- pinions c, g, f engages two intermediate gearwheels. In another arrangement, the wheels v, w are omitted and the pinions act at diametrically opposite points of the wheels l, m. Three driving- turbines a, b, c are either in series or independent. The invention is applicable also to multiplying gear, as for example when a low-speed electric motor drives a high-speed centrifugal blower or fan which has unbalanced end thrust. Specification 111,329 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
