Abstract

602,573. Hydraulic clutches. BAILEY, R. W., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 11, 1945, No. 33512. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] In a ship's propulsion plant in which combustion products are used to generate steam for use in at least two steam turbine stages and are afterwards used as the working fluid in a gas turbine, as described in Specification 459,365, [Group XXVI], the gas turbine and the high-pressure steam turbine are not reversible and are connected to the same or separate propeller shaft through a reversible drive. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, a gas generator 1 delivers to a steam generator 2 and a superheater and reheater 3 in both of which further fuel is burnt. The products of combustion go by pipes 6, 7 to a gas turbine 8. Steam from the generator 2 goes to a superheater coil 10 and thence to a steam turbine 12. From that turbine it goes to an interstage reheater coil 14 and thence to a low-pressure turbine 15. For astern running, a low-pressure astern turbine 21 without reheating replaces the turbine 15 which then rotates idly. For cruising, the lowpressure turbine 15 may be cut out and the exhaust from turbine 12 sent by way of a precondenser 23 to the main condenser 17. The turbines 8, 12 may drive the propeller 28 through a reversible electrical transmission. Forward and astern toothed gearing may be provided with hydraulic clutches in both pinion shafts. The forward clutch may be associated with a positive clutch and have braking means for bringing the hydraulic coupling parts into synchronism prior to engaging the positive clutch. The gas and steam turbines may be on separate shafts with hydraulic clutches and separate driving pinions for forward running and geared to a third shaft with hydraulic clutch and pinion for astern running. The hydraulic clutches may be provided with friction creating surfaces such as overlapping rings on the two halves so that the empty clutches will maintain uni-directional contact between the gear wheel teeth. The gas turbine may be arranged to drive a middle propeller and the steam turbines two wing propellers so that the gas turbine alone or the steam turbines alone could be used.
