Abstract

598,699. Toothed gearing. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and MARCHANT, F. C. I. March 19, 1946, No. 8560. [Class 80(i)] [Also in Groups XXVI, XXVII and XXXIII] A power plant comprises two or more engines, a reduction gearing between each engine and a common shaft, and a further reduction gearing between the shaft and each of two oppositelyrotating shafts. The invention is described as applied to an aeroplane, but it may be applied to boats, land vehicles, such as locomotives or stationary installations. Each engine is buried within the wing 7 and comprises a gas turbine 11 having two independently rotating rotors, one of which drives a compressor 9, the other driving a shaft 13. Air enters through intakes 8 and the exhaust gases leave by way of jet pipes 12. Each shaft 13 drives the common shaft 16 through pinion 18, gearwheel 19 and idler gear 20. Pinion 18 and idler 20 are each formed as two separate gears for convenience in construction. Each pinion 18 is connected to its shaft 13 by means of a clutch 22 one element of which is fast with the pinion, the other element comprising a sleeve 23 splined to the shaft and axially movable by a hydraulic ram 25. The clutch may be controlled either manually or automatically in accordance with, say, the speed or delivery pressure of the compressor. The shaft 16 drives five layshafts 31 through a pinion 30 and gears 32. Each layshaft carries a pinion 33 and a gearwheel 35, which mesh respectively with gearwheels 34 and 36 carried by co-axial propeller shafts 14a, 14b. Shaft 16 is flexibly connected at each end by means of a ball-and-socket joint 40 and a splined connection 39. Auxiliaries are driven through gearing 41. The gas turbine power units may be replaced by reciprocating internal combustion engines. The Provisional Specification describes a modification of the final reduction gearing having six layshafts: the input shaft has two gears, each of which meshes with gears on three of the layshafts. Specification 598,698, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
