Abstract
596,819. Motor power plant. NAPIER , & SON, Ltd., D., BARLOW, B. W., SAMMONS, H., and PENN, A. J. July 18, 1945, No. 18402. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXIII] In a power plant comprising a two-stroke internal combustion engine A, preferably with compression ignition, driving through gearing B, C, C<1>, C<2>, a propeller D disposed with its axis parallel to the engine crankshaft A<1> and through gearing M<1>, M, L<2>, a centrifugal compressor L which supercharges the engine, the exhaust of the engine being used in a turbine F which drives direct through a shaft G an axial flow compressor J which supplies air to the centrifugal compressor L and through gearing G<1>, K<2>, a propeller K which is co-axial with the engine driven propeller D, the exhaust gas turbine F, axial flow compressor J and the engine driven centrifugal compressor L have a common axis of rotation parallel to the crankshaft A<1> A second turbine F', which may be amounted on the shaft G or on a separate shaft connected to' the shaft G by gearing, may be used to supplement the power of the turbine F. A valve E<1> in the piping E enables the exhaust gases from the engine to be passed through the turbine F<1> when desired. The air delivered by the axial flow compressor J passes through an intercooler N on its way to the centrifugal compressor L. A byepass N<1> with a valve N<2> enables the air to be diverted round the intercooler N, if desired. Alternatively, the byepass may be omitted and means provided for controlling the supply of coolant to the intercooler N. In the pipng E, through which the exhaust gases from the engine flow to the turbine, there may be a combustion chamber O in which fuel is injected at O<1>. A byepass E<2> with a valve E<3> may also be provided to enable the combustion chamber to be cut out of operation. Alternatively, means may be provided to control the supply of fuel to the burner O<1>. The centrifugal compressor L may be driven as shown, from the remote end of the crankshaft through a flexible shaft M<2> or through gearing from the adjacent end of the crankshaft. The gases leaving the turbine may be used to give a propulsive jet. According to the Provisional Specification, the combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber O may be assisted by allowing some air to enter the exhaust passage from the centrifugal compressor, a bleed-off pipe in which there is a valve running from this compressor to the exhaust gas piping at a place between the engine and the combustion chamber. Specifications 581,472, 583,500 and 583,727 are referred to.
