Abstract
617,856. Gas turbine plant. GRYLLS, S. H. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35512. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine plant for driving a road vehicle comprises a turbine 14 coupled to a compressor 12, and a turbine 16 driving the road wheels 20A through reduction gearing 19. Between the two turbines are a free-wheel clutch 42, shaft 43 and reduction gearing 46, such that the compressor turbine 14 normally runs independently of the power turbine 16, but, during retardation, when the speed of turbine 14 has fallen sufficiently the power turbine commences to drive it and it, therefore, acts as a brake on the system. The compressed air receives heat from the exhaust of turbine 16 in a heat-exchanger 22 and passes through swirl openings 28 into a combustion chamber 25. Secondary and tertiary air enters the chamber 25 through holes 29, 31. The main fuel supply through pipe 65 is controlled by a throttle valve 64 and supply for slow-running passes a governor-controlled valve 69 which is opened when the speed falls near to the minimum self-driving speed and thereafter brings the compressor set to its slow running speed. A continuous supply to a pilot jet 67 goes by pipe 68.
