Abstract

662,867. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT). Ltd. March 16, 1950 [March 30, 1949], No. 8686/49. Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XXXI] A gas turbine plant of the kind having a gas generator set comprising a compressor, a combustion system and a compressor driving turbine and an independently rotatable radial-vane centripetal flow turbine for delivering external power has means, operative when the power turbine is overdriven, to permit the relief of working fluid from the power turbine and means to effect a reverse flow of fluid through the power turbine to produce a braking effect. The plant shown comprises a compressor 1, a combustion chamber 2, a compressordriving turbine 4 and a power turbine 5 of the radial-vane centripetal flow type connected to the propelling wheels 6 of a vehicle. The exhaust of the turbine 5 is led through a heat exchanger 7 for preheating the air supply to the combustion chamber. When the turbine 5 is overdriven from the propelling wheels, its rotor will suck air from its exhaust and deliver it into its inlet volute. To divert this air and the exhaust gas from the turbine 4, a valve system 13, 15, is provided. The valve 13 connects the exhaust gas from the turbine 4 and the air from the turbine 5 to the byepass 14. The valve 15 connects the duct 14 to the heat-exchanger 7 and also prevents the exhaust travelling upstream. If desired, the valve 13 may be replaced by two valves 13, 13a, the former being used for the exhaust gases from the turbine 4 and the latter for the air from the turibne 5. A valve 16 which allows the turbine 5 to suck air from the atmosphere is also provided. These valves are operated by a speed governor 19 operated by the cage of a differential gear 18 interconnecting the two turbines, 4, 5. An interlock connection 19b is provided between the throttle 3 and the governor 19 to allow operation of the latter only when the throttle is in the idling position. In a modification these valves are operated solely by the throttle lever when the latter is moved, in the closing direction, past the idling position. In a further modification, the governor 19 is dispensed with, and a reduction or reversing gear provided between the turbine 5 and the differential gear. In this case, the valves are made to open by the differential turning in a particular direction when the turbine 4 is idling. In another modification, the differential gear is dispensed with and the valves operated by a governor driven by the turbine 5 so long as the throttle is in the idling position.
