Abstract

746,377. Turbine plant. BARKER, A. Dec. 4, 1953 [April 29, 1953], Nc. 11871/53- Class 110(3) A gas turbine plant in which heat is transferred in a heat exchanger from the exhaust gases to a condensible secondary working fluid which is injected into the combustion chamber or chambers has a condenser through which the gases and secondary fluid leaving the heat exchanger are passed and means for controlling the condenser temperature so as to determine the amount of secondary fluid which passes through the condenser to atrriosphere. A compressor 2 supplies air to a series of combustion chambers 5 feeding a turbine 8 driving the compressor. Fuel is supplied to the combustion chambers by an engine driven pump 7. The turbine exhaust gases enter a casing 9 containing a heat exchanger comprising coils of piping 11, 12 and baffle means 13, 14, 15, 16. The gases leaving the casing 9 pass into a direct contact condenser 18 provided with sprays 19, and exhaust to atmosphere through the duct 20. Condensate is collected in the well 21 and delivered by a pump 22 to the inlet 23 of the coils 11, 12. The steam raised in the heat exchanger is led to a steam turbine 25 mounted on the shaft 1 between the compressor 2 and gas turbine 8. The exhaust from the turbine 25 is mixed with the air supplied to the combustion chamber in the ducts 26. The turbine 25 may be dispensed with, if desired. The pump 22 also supplies water for direct injection into the compressor intake through a pipe 27 and through a pipe 28 to a cooler or radiator 29 from which the cooled water is supplied to the condenser sprays through pipes 30, 31. The branch pipe 28 is controlled by a valve 32 actuated by a float 33 in the condenser well. A compressor 34 may be provided to supply cooling air to the rear bearing 35. A secondary fluid other than water may be used.
