Abstract
1280695 Reciprocating pumps; gas turbine plant ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 16 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 46016/69 Headings F1A and F1G A pumping system for pumping crude oil coma pump 12, e. g. a large piston pump, in the crude oil pipeline 10 driven by an I.C. engine, e.g. a gas turbine engine 14, the fuel for the engine being derived from the crude oil in the pipeline by withdrawing a small portion of the oil downstream of pump 12 by a pump 34 in line 32, heating the oil in heat exchangers 42 and 44 and passing the heated oil through a pressure reducing valve 50 to flash off the lighter fractions, e.g. the top 5 to 10%, which pass from chamber 56 to a gaseous fuel flow control unit 64 and then to the engine combustion equipment 24. Coil 46 of heat exchanger 44 is heated by water heated in heat exchanger 50 by the gas turbine exhaust gases. The crude oil residue from chamber 56 passes through coil 60 of heat exchanger 42 to heat the incoming oil and is returned to pipeline 10 by pump 36. Pumps 34 and 36 may be piston pumps arranged back-to-back and driven by the I. C. engine via gearbox 18.
