Abstract

397,824. Regulating. SELCO MOTOR CO. AKTIEBOLAGET, 16, Kungstradgardsgatan, Stockholm. Nov. 23, 1931, No. 32436. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] With engines employed on aircraft use is made of the exhaust from some cylinders or engines when flying at great heights, by converting some of the power or pump cylinders into expansion cylinders wherein the exhaust from the remaining power cylinders may be employed. In a multi-cylinder four-stroke engine the cam shaft is slidable axially so that the cylinder may be changed over in succession to compound working ; when all the cylinders are so changed the exhaust must be taken from some other engine. In two- or four-stroke engines with coaxial air pumps the power cylinder and, if desired, some of the pump chambers may be changed over by suitable valves in the piping ; when working with exhaust some of the chambers may be freely open to the atmosphere to allow to-and-fro cooling movement of the air and pump chambers may be specially cooled when working with exhaust. In one form with coaxial working cylinders 61, Fig. 12, charge is normally supplied by the double-acting pump 63 which delivers to a pipe 66 connected to the power cylinder inlet pipes 67 ; exhaust is by the pipes 68. To change over the cocks 70, 72, 73 are turned through 90‹ and exhaust from another engine supplied by the pipe 74 to all the chambers. In a two-stroke-cycle engine with terminal exhaust ports special inlet and exhaust valves are arranged in the cylinder head for compound working and the terminal ports are closed ; the coaxial pump in this arrangement then also works on waste gas. The change-over and the control of the valves of the engine may be effected hydraulically or electrically. Power plant.-The exhaust may be used in a turbine or reciprocating engine to drive an Independent propeller through reducing gear ; or a turbine or reciprocating engine 111, Fig. 16, drives on the main propeller shaft through reducing gear 112 and clutch 116. If desired the main engine may be disconnected by the clutch 117 from the propeller which is then driven only by the waste gas engine 111 supplied with power from the main engine.
