Abstract

477,901. Marine power plant. BAUER, G. July 8, 1936, No. 18949. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Marine power plant employing high-pressure and high-temperature steam and comprising a multi-cylinder reciprocating engine and an exhaust steam turbine includes also an advance high-pressure turbine and a steam cooler is introduced between this high-pressure turbine and the high-pressure cylinder of the reciprocating engine. For normal forward travel, steam is passed first through the high-pressure turbine, but for reversing it passes first to the steam cooler and the high - pressure turbine is byepassed. The plant comprises a reciprocating engine 1, an exhaust turbine 2 driving a propeller shaft 5 through reduction gears 6, hydraulic coupling 19 and reduction gears 7, a condenser 3 and an advance turbine 12 is coupled through reduction gears 13 and a hydraulic coupling 19 to the gear 7. Further, there is a steam cooler 11 which is in the pipeline 10 from the high-pressure boiler 8, the latter being also connected by a pipe-line 9 with the high-pressure turbine 12. For normal forward running, the valve 17 is opened and valve 18 is closed to cut out the cooler 11, but on reversing the valve 17 is closed and the valve 18 opened so that the steam first passes through cooler 11 before reaching the highpressure cylinder 15 of the reciprocating engine. Exhaust steam from the engine is in this case turned direct to the condenser instead of to the exhaust turbine 2. Instead of mechanical and hydraulic connection of the engines with the screw propeller shaft 5, an electric drive may be used. The controls of the gear couplings and valves of the turbines and cooler may be coupled to the reversing control for simultaneous action.
