Abstract

390,785. Marine power plant. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. Jan. 16, 1933, No. 1463. Convention date, Jan. 16, 1932. [Class 110 (iii).] An engine plant, more particularly for marine propulsion, comprises a reversible main reciprocating engine driving its shaft direct, a super-pressure engine disposed before the main engine, and an exhaust steam turbine disposed after, these two engines being permanently geared to the common slow running main shaft. The super-pressure engine is reversible or consists of an ahead and an astern engine, the reversal or disconnection of the engine being effected simultaneously with the reversal of the main engine. A triple-expansion main engine 2 drives a propeller shaft direct through a coupling 7. On the shaft is a gear wheel 6 which through double reduction gears 5 is coupled to an exhaust turbine 3 and through single reduction gears 4 with a super-pressure engine 1 comprising a reversible reciprocating engine having three cylinders in parallel. In addition to the manoeuvring valve 14 and connecting valve 17, an extra valve 15 is employed for the main engine 2 when the initial engine 1 is disconnected, and a valve 16 is provided for changing over the main engine exhaust steam from the turbine to a condenser 8. In a modification the engine 1 is replaced by an ahead and an astern turbine, the changeover valves are suitably connected and these may be operated mechanically, hydraulically or electrically.
