[Class 7 (ii).] To increase the output of an existing marine engine plant in which a main engine directly drives the propeller shaft, a high-speed auxiliary Diesel engine is added and arranged to drive the shaft through toothed gearing. Fig. 1 shows two propeller shafts 11 driven directly by two main engines 10, two auxiliary engines 1 being added and coupled to the shafts through hydraulic couplings 3 and gearing 5, 6. The large wheel 6 of the toothed gearing may be connected to the shaft through an elastic coupling. The auxiliary engine may also be arranged to drive a compresser, generator, or other auxiliary, either when not in use for propulsion or simultaneously therewith. The large gear wheel is arranged, or made of such weight, that the torsional vibrations have their centre, or are reduced to a minimum, at the location of the gear ; or additional fly-weights may be arranged on the propeller shaft for this purpose.
