1356728 Propelling ships F AMIOT 11 Aug 1972 [13 Jan 1972] 37629/72 Heading B7V A marine propulsion installation, particularly for high-speed launches, includes a reduction gear mechanism 3 having a pair of primary input shafts 2a, 2b driven by a pair of main engines 1a, 1b, a secondary input shaft 6a driven by an auxiliary engine 5 and an output shaft 4 coupled to a screw shaft 4a, the reduction gear mechanism including (a) means for selectively coupling either or both main engines 1a, 1b to the output shaft 4, (b) means for coupling the auxiliary engine 5 to the output shaft 4 with the main engines la, 1b decoupled and (c) means including a freewheel device for coupling the auxiliary engine 5 to either of the main engines la, 1b to start the main engines. The reduction gear mechanism 3 also carries auxiliaries for the main engines la, 1b, e.g. oil and water pumps 7, 8, which may be selectively driven either by the auxiliary engine 5 while the main engines la, 1b are being brought to operating temperature prior to starting, or by the main engines 1a, 1b.
