In a propulsion system for a twinscrew ship in which each of the two power paths leading to the propellers 3, 4 includes a principal gear train 5-6, 7-8 comprising a pinion 5, 7 which is connected via a clutch IA, IB to the associated engine 1, 2, a transverse driving connection (e.g. comprising a shaft 11 connected through bevel gears 18, 19 to countershafts 12, 13 having gear wheels 14 and 16, 15 and 17 engaging with gear wheels 24 and 22, 25 and 23) provided between the two power paths is connectable at both ends selectively by a first auxiliary clutch IIA, IIB to the engine shaft 9, 10 and/or by a second auxiliary clutch IIIA, IIIB to the pinion shaft 5, 7.
