Abstract

563,115. Power plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WELSH, R. J. Dec. 15, 1942, No. 17821. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Power plant comprises two or more reciprocating engines;driving shafts &c. through gearing, each engine being- so constructed that the drive may be taken from either end of the shaft as desired, whereby all the engines employed may be of the same hand. In a marine plant, as shown, propeller shafts 1 are driven through gearing 3, 4 and mechanical or electromagnetic couplings 7 by diesel engines A-H. All the engines are of the same hand as regards the disposition of the cam-shafts &c. and fly-wheel couplings 7 being adapted to be connected to either end of the shaft as desired. Where auxiliary electric generators 5 are to be driven, these are coupled only to engines similarly mounted as regards the disposition of the fly-wheels 2 and couplings 7.
