Abstract
403,543. Hydraulic transmission of power. BAUER, G., 82, Mittelweg, Hamburg, and SCHMIESKE, C., 12, Wangeroogerstrasse, Bremen, both in Germany. March 14, 1933, No. 7730. [Class 69 (ii).] In a driving system, such as a marine engine plant with high speed and cruising engines, in which there are a plurality of separate prime motors one or more of which need to be disconnected at certain times, there is provided for each such motor a hydraulic coupling comprising a pair of vaned runners one of which is permanently fast on its .shaft while the other is connected to its shaft through a free wheel, whereby the connexion between the shafts is automatically completely broken when the prime motor driving the coupling stops, or runs more slowly than, or in the reverse direction to, the driven shaft. In the example given, a shaft 3 transmits low speed and power and is fast with a runner 1, while the shaft 4 transmitting high power and speed is connected to its runner 2 through a freewheel device 5, 6. The arrangement is applicable in plants comprising two engines in parallel which drive a single shaft through hydraulic couplings and toothed-wheel gearing, and may also be employed in starting-up heavy machines.
