[Class 38 (iv)] (Also in Group XXVII An internal combustion engine 34, Fig. 3, or other prime mover, coupled to a propeller shaft 10 through a synchromesh or like free-wheel coupling 37 is first run below full speed, with the coupling slipping, driving an electrical generator 36 whereby power is supplied to a motor 38 driving the shaft through gearing 39, 40. When the motor speed equals the engine speed the coupling 37 is automatically locked in engagement and the engine is then accelerated to 'full' speed, taking up the drive direct. A second engine 35 coupled to the shaft 10 through a similar coupling 41 may then be run up to speed to share the load: Reverse driving may be effected by using the motor, which may be disengaged from the engine by a dog clutch. Alternating or direct current may be employed. A similar system is described employing four engines 19 ... 22, two of which are coupled to separate generators 30, 31 supplying a single electric motor 28. All units may be mounted on brackets forming part of the gear casing 11. The couplings may be of any suitable type, Legge synchromesh couplings (Specification 354,711, [Group XXIV]), with locking means electromagnetically operated, and hydraulic couplings, such as fluid flywheels, being mentioned. Governing means may be provided to ensure that pairs of engines may be accelerated at the same rate.
