Abstract

541,105. Transmitting mechanical power ; centrifugal governors. LIEBRECHT, H. F. Feb. 10, 1940, No. 2585. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVI] An electromechanical infinitely variable speed gear has two or more epicyclic gears in series relation and electrical means byepassing energy from one part of the epicyclic gear to another. Fig. 1 shows a transmission system in which the load shaft k is driven from the element h of an epicyclic gear of which the elements i, g are respectively driven by the elements c, e of another epicyclic gear of which the element d is driven by a prime mover. In order to balance the tangential forces on the elements g, i at various velocity ratios of the transmission a dynamo driven by the elements c is connected to a motor driving the element g, for example by being coupled to the reversing pinion r shown. The electrical machines may be single or polyphase types but are preferably D.C. so that they may serve for starting the prime mover and for lighting and charging the battery on a vehicle. Preferably the dynamo is independently or shunt excited and the motor series wound, but other arrangements are suggested, including a machine with a single field and two armatures respectively inside and outside the field magnet. Clutches may be provided at x or x<SP>1</SP> to lock the first epicyclic gear. Band brakes may be arranged at v and wand a clutch may be interposed at y. When driven by an internal combustion engine having a spring loaded governor the spring tension may be varied according to the speed of the output shaft of the transmission by an auxiliary centrifugal governor. Specification 529,248, [Group XXIV], is referred to.
