Abstract

867,316. Automatic speed-control systems; transmitting mechanical power. BENDIX CORPORATION. June 1, 1959 [June 12, 1958], No. 18663/59. Class 38 (4). An alternator is coupled to a variable-speed prime mover through differential gearing to be driven at a constant speed, one input shaft of the gearing being driven by the prime mover which is also coupled to a D.C. machine A. A second input shaft of the differential gearing is coupled to a D.C. machine B which drives the cage of the gear assembly and has its armature connected in a loop circuit with the armature of the machine A, the alternator being coupled to the output shaft of the differential. The excitation of the machine B is fixed whilst that of the machine A is varied in accordance with the deviation of the frequency of the alternator from a predetermined value, the machine B operating alternately as a motor or a dynamic brake. The alternator may be operated as a synchronous motor for starting a combustion engine, the differential being constructed as a dual gear device with over-running clutches to permit transfer of torque in both directions. In this case, the excitation of the machine A is fixed and that of the machine B is variable to keep the load on the A.C. motor constant during the starting period.
