Abstract
829,607. Clutch combinations. SULZER FRERES S.A. March 4, 1958 [March 5, 1957], No. 6921/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] A fluid coupling is operated in parallel with a mechanical clutch to transmit starting power from an electrical machine used as a motor to a prime mover, and to transmit running power from the prime mover to the electrical machine used as an alternator. A machine 2, normally used as a synchronous condenser, is used to start the prime mover, which may be a gas turbine, by filling a fluid coupling 6 with oil. The speed of the prime mover is raised to a value at which it is self-sustaining and then raised further under its own power to synchronous speed. The clutch 5 (which may be a magnetic clutch) is then engaged and the prime mover drives the machine 2 as a generator. Other embodiments show the use of reduction gearing to reduce the torque transmitted by the fluid-coupling 6 and a further mechanical clutch (which may act as a freewheel) to allow the gearing to idle when the clutch 5 has been engaged. The gearing and further clutch may be combined in the form of an epicyclic transmission.
