Abstract
1,147,224. Variable speed gear. ZAHNRADERFABRIK RENK A.G. 22 April, 1966 [24 April, 1965], No. 17819/66. Heading F2D. [Also in Division H2] The ring 5 of a sun-ring planetary gear 3, 4, 5, is controlled by a variable speed electric motor-generator 10 through a one-way clutch 7, a brake 8, and a pinion 6 to adjust the output speed of the gear. With the brake 8 applied and the motor 10 disengaged, the ring 5 is prevented from rotating in the direction of the power take-off sun gear 4 by the clutch 7, giving a fixed reduction ratio. On engaging the motor 10 the clutch releases automatically to allow the ring to be driven, increasing the output speed. On disengaging the brake 8, the ring gear 5 may be braked by the motor 10 acting as a generator to decrease the output speed. Two such trains may be connected in parallel, Fig. 5, power from a single motor (1) driving the trains through power-distributing gear (12). Each motor (10) is connected to its pinion (6) by a disconnecting coupling (13), and brakes (14) are provided between the output sungears (4) and each processing machine (11), to prevent power being transmitted to a defective machine (11) whilst allowing the other machine to be driven. A single processing machine (11), Fig. 6, may be driven by the two superimposed trains, which are followed by a power-collecting gear (15). The planetary gear may drive a boiler-water feed-pump or ventilators.
