Abstract

1,076,419. Motor/generator driving arrangements. VEB. ENERGIE PROJEKTIERUNG. Sept. 4, 1964, No. 36301/64. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A power plant comprises a pump-turbine 3 which runs in a different direction and at a different speed when acting as a pump than when acting as a turbine, connected through a gear-box 2 to an electrical machine 1 which runs in the same direction and at the same speed when acting as a motor and when acting as a generator. The gear-box 2 comprises a dual hydraulic coupling having two output members 7, 8 and a common input member 6, the latter being connected to the shaft of the pumpturbine 3. The gear-box 2 also comprises a planetary gearing 5 having a stationary annulus gear and a rotating planet carrier, the latter being connected to the output member 7. A further gearing 4 is similar to the planetary gearing 5 but has a stationary planet-carrier and a rotating annulus gear, the latter being connected to the output member 8. The central or sun gear of each gearing 4, 5 is connected to the shaft of the electrical machine 1. For turbine-generator operation, coupling. 6, 7 is filled with oil and the drive is transmitted through this coupling and the step-up gearing 5. For motor-pump operation, coupling 6, 8 is filled with oil and the drive is transmitted through the step-down reversing gearing 4 and this coupling. Changeover from one type of operation to the other is effected. without stopping the electrical machine 1 or altering its speed, by emptying one coupling and at the same time filling the other coupling. This brakes the pump-turbine hydraulically to rest and sets it running in the opposite direction. The pump-turbine does not have to be emptied of water during the changeover. If both couplings are emptied to disconnect the pump-turbine from the electrical machine, the latter continues running but functions as a synchronous condenser for improving the power factor of the system. The hydraulic couplings may be located adjacent the electrical machine 1 instead of the pump-turbine 3 and may be of torqueconverter type. The heat due to losses in the electrical machine, gearing and hydraulic couplings can be used in a common recuperation plant.
