Abstract

464,775. Hydraulic transmission of power. SINCLAIR, H. Oct. 23, 1935, No. 29307. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A variable-speed gearing embodying hydraulic couplings comprises an engine shaft 10 which drives an intermediate shaft 15 through a hydraulic coupling 11, 13 and a hydraulic torque converter 12, 14, which are in parallel. The intermediate shaft 15 acts as a driving-shaft for another hydraulic coupling 16, 17, which is adapted to run full or empty, and an epicyclic gear train 41, 42, 44. Two speeds are obtained through the epicyclic gear by running the hydraulic coupling 16, 17 full or empty, the runner being driven at approximately impeller speed or held stationary respectively. Two more speeds are obtained by running either the torque converter 12, 14 or the coupling 11, 13 full to give a reduced speed or a direct drive to the driving-shaft 15 of the coupling 16, 17 and the epicyclic gear, thus enabling four speeds to be obtained in all of the shaft 62. The operations of emptying and filling the torque converter 12, 14 and the hydraulic couplings 11, 13, and 16, 17 are controlled by a piston valve 97 which regulates the fluid supply from a pump 91 through pipes 85, 84, and 86 respectively.
