Abstract
452,922. Aircraft with rotary-wing systems. YOXALL, J., YorkHouse, Deganwy, Carnarvonshire, and PROPELLO INVENTIONS, Ltd., 105, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, London. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3388. [Class 4] [See also Group XXIV] Power-transmission mechanism for aircraft includes a fluid-flywheel, hydraulic coupling, or torque-converter, having two or more members relatively and individually rotatable, combined and arranged with change-speed gearing to operate between an engine and a lifting or stabilizing rotor. As shown, a driving shaft 2 is mounted in bearings 3, 5, the latter being disposed in a recess in a fluid coupling element 22. An intermediate element 8 of a hydraulic clutch comprising members 9, 12, is splined to the shaft. The clutch is operated by fluid pressure admitted through a pipe 18 and passages 29 to metallic bellows 14. The clutch member 9 is carried by the primary fluid coupling element 11 which is integral with a casing 20 and is rotatable on bearings 16, 17. Thus power is transmitted from the shaft 2 on closure of the clutch through the fluid coupling, which may be of the kind described in Specification 414,641, [Group XXIX], or 448,159, [Group XIX], to a shaft 23. The shaft 23 drives a shaft 28 connected to the rotor or propeller through a countershaft synchro-mesh change-speed gear, the gear changes of which are regulated by actuation of a lever 27. Any type of variable-speed gear may be employed including that described in Specification 450,246. Specifications 421,178 and 448,560 also are referred to.
