Abstract

812,784. Reversing gearing; clutches. SNOW-NABSTEDT GEAR CORPORATION. Jan. 28, 1957 [Feb. 29, 1956], No. 3014/57. Class 80 (2). A reversing and reduction gear comprises a driving drum containing means for clutching the drum to either of two concentric driven shafts, the inner shaft having a pinion driving a gear on the output shaft, and the outer shaft driving the gear through a duplex pinion reverse gear. A drum B having a front wall 11, connected to a prime mover, and a rear wall 12 and an intermediate partition 28 forms the driving member of two hydraulically operated friction clutches C, D engaged by a duplex piston E. Fluid from a control valve L is fed through passages 36 or 37 in a shaft K rotating with the drum B to passages 39 or 40 to move the piston E forwards or rearwards to engage the clutches C or D. The driven plates of the clutch C are splined to the forward bell-shaped end of a driven shaft F carrying a pinion J meshing with a hull wheel 59 on the offset output shaft H. The driven plates of the clutch D are likewise splined to the end of a concentric sleeve G having a pinion M meshing with a pinion on a layshaft having a second pinion engaging the wheel 59. Lubrication of the clutches and gears is provided by a pump driven from a gear 43a keyed to the shaft K and feeding oil through the hollow shaft F.
