Abstract

606,678. Clutches; reverse gearing. HINDMARCH, T. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21508. [Class 80(ii)] A combined dog and friction clutch between a driving shaft a and a driven element such as a gear d, d<1> comprises inner members b, b<1> carrying V-shaped friction rings which engage with corresponding grooves in the outer driven member d, d<1> and intermediate members e, e<1> carrying dogs such as balls g, g<1> for engaging in recesses h, h<1> in the outer members. The friction elements may be first actuated to engage by pressure fluid supplied to a chamber b<3> between the inner members b, b<1> through passages c, c<1> in the shaft a and then the dog clutch elements by pressure fluid supplied to chambers f<1>, f<2> between the inner and intermediate members through passages f<3>, f<4>. Disengagement of both clutches is effected by pressure fluid supplied to chambers i, i<1> between the intermediate and outer members through passages i<2>, i<3>. In one application, two such clutches are used in a marine reverse gear to connect alternatively two spur gears to their shaft and are controlled by a single control valve. In a bevel reverse gear, Fig. 3, the input shaft k is adapted to be connected direct to the output shaft l or through a bevel train k<3>, k<4>, k<5>, by friction and dog dutches. In this arrangement, the friction clutches are arranged internally of the gears k<3>, k<4> to connect one or other to the driven shaft l and the dog clutches comprises dogs m<1> on either side of a member m axially slidable on the shaft l and operated by fluid pressure in chambers m<2> or m<3>.
