Abstract
624,170. Synchromeshed claw clutches. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1945, No. 33330. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] To effect positive release of a friction synchronising- cone 12 immediately prior to meshing engagement of associated toothed clutch-members 6, 11, the latter have cam-surfaces 27, 28, which during the final axial engaging movement of the toothed clutchsleeve 11 (position shown), impart a positive inward thrust to levers 22, pivoted at 23 to the synchronising- cone 12, which latter is thereby moved positively axially away from the co-operating friction cone 16 on the toothed member 6. The clutch-sleeve 11 is splined on a hub 8 secured to a shaft which freely carries two toothed members such as 6, integral with pinions controlling change-speed or reverse gearing. During engagement initial axial thrust is imparted to the synchronising-cone 12 by the sliding clutchsleeve 11 through a spring-ring 32 which, in the neutral position, engages a groove 30 in the sleeve 11. The synchronising-cone 12 has the usual pointed balk-teeth 18, which align with the pointed ends of the teeth in the sleeve 11 to transmit axial pressure from the latter to the cone 12 until synchronism is reached, whereupon the cone 12 is turned relatively to the clutch-sleeve 11, in opposition to tangential coil-springs 35 in pockets between the sleeve 11 and cone 12, to permit passage of the clutch sleeve 11 to mesh the member 6.
